That means establishing a baseline, a clear picture of your IT estate and the carbon footprint associated with it.<\/p>\n<p>For most organisations, this starts with IT asset management (ITAM) data: <a href=\"https:\/\/licensedashboard.com\/it-asset-visibility\/it-asset-discovery-and-inventory\/\">software inventory<\/a>, licence utilisation, cloud consumption, and hardware lifecycle status. This is the same data that drives cost optimisation decisions, and it&#8217;s the foundation of any credible GreenOps strategy.<\/p>\n<p>At this stage, the key questions are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What software and cloud resources are we running, and at what level of utilisation?<\/li>\n<li>Where are the largest concentrations of waste, idle licences, over-provisioned environments, ageing hardware?<\/li>\n<li>What does our current IT estate look like from a carbon perspective?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don&#8217;t need perfect data to start. For it to gain traction internally, it needs to connect to the broader sustainability goals your organisation has already committed to, whether that&#8217;s a net-zero target, an ESG reporting obligation, or a carbon reduction roadmap.<\/p>\n<p>That means translating high-level commitments into IT-specific metrics. Useful starting points include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Licence utilisation rate \u2014 tracking the percentage of assigned licences actively in use<\/li>\n<li>Cloud resource efficiency \u2014 measuring provisioned capacity versus actual consumption<\/li>\n<li>Hardware refresh rate \u2014 monitoring average device age and the pace of replacement cycles<\/li>\n<li>Software estate carbon intensity \u2014 an emerging metric that estimates emissions associated with your software and infrastructure footprint<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These metrics give IT teams a concrete way to demonstrate progress against sustainability goals, and give leadership a clear line of sight from IT decisions to organisational outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Build optimisation into your regular ITAM practice <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of the most common GreenOps mistakes is treating it as a project rather than a process. A one-time audit will surface waste and generate savings, but without ongoing governance, the same waste will quietly accumulate again within months.<\/p>\n<p>The organisations that make the most sustainable progress are those that embed GreenOps thinking into their existing ITAM workflows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>At renewal<\/strong> \u2014 review utilisation before auto-renewing, right-size seat counts, and challenge whether every tool still earns its place in the estate<\/li>\n<li><strong>At procurement<\/strong> \u2014 factor sustainability criteria into vendor selection and purchasing decisions alongside cost and performance<\/li>\n<li><strong>At offboarding<\/strong> \u2014 ensure licences are reclaimed promptly when employees leave, rather than sitting idle on dormant accounts<\/li>\n<li><strong>At refresh<\/strong> \u2014 extend hardware lifecycles where software optimisation makes it viable, and ensure responsible disposal when devices do reach end of life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>None of these require a new process. They require sustainability to become a standing consideration within the processes you already have.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bring the right stakeholders along <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>GreenOps can&#8217;t be owned by IT alone. For it to deliver its full potential, it needs buy-in from the teams whose decisions shape the IT estate, procurement, finance, operations, and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>That means making the business case clearly and in terms that resonate across functions. For finance, it&#8217;s cost reduction. For sustainability teams, it&#8217;s measurable progress toward ESG targets. For leadership, it&#8217;s demonstrable action on an issue that regulators, investors, and customers are paying closer attention to.<\/p>\n<p>ITAM data is the common thread. It provides the evidence base that makes GreenOps credible, not as a sustainability aspiration, but as an operational discipline with measurable outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The opportunity ahead<\/h2>\n<p>GreenOps is still an emerging practice for most organisations.
