Turning insight into action: building your GreenOps strategy
Understanding GreenOps is one thing. Putting it into practice is another.

Blog,
Many organisations reach the same point: they recognise the opportunity to reduce IT’s environmental impact, they know their asset data holds the answers, and then progress stalls. Not because the intent isn’t there, but because there’s no clear framework for turning sustainability ambitions into operational reality.
That’s what this post is about. Not the theory of GreenOps, but the practical steps to build a strategy that delivers results.
Start with a baseline
Before you can reduce IT’s environmental impact, you need to understand what it currently is. That means establishing a baseline, a clear picture of your IT estate and the carbon footprint associated with it.
For most organisations, this starts with IT asset management (ITAM) data: software inventory, licence utilisation, cloud consumption, and hardware lifecycle status. This is the same data that drives cost optimisation decisions, and it’s the foundation of any credible GreenOps strategy.
At this stage, the key questions are:
- What software and cloud resources are we running, and at what level of utilisation?
- Where are the largest concentrations of waste, idle licences, over-provisioned environments, ageing hardware?
- What does our current IT estate look like from a carbon perspective?
You don’t need perfect data to start. A directionally accurate baseline is enough to identify where the biggest opportunities lie.

Set goals that connect IT to your organisation’s sustainability commitments
GreenOps doesn’t exist in isolation. For it to gain traction internally, it needs to connect to the broader sustainability goals your organisation has already committed to, whether that’s a net-zero target, an ESG reporting obligation, or a carbon reduction roadmap.
That means translating high-level commitments into IT-specific metrics. Useful starting points include:
- Licence utilisation rate — tracking the percentage of assigned licences actively in use
- Cloud resource efficiency — measuring provisioned capacity versus actual consumption
- Hardware refresh rate — monitoring average device age and the pace of replacement cycles
- Software estate carbon intensity — an emerging metric that estimates emissions associated with your software and infrastructure footprint
These metrics give IT teams a concrete way to demonstrate progress against sustainability goals, and give leadership a clear line of sight from IT decisions to organisational outcomes.
Build optimisation into your regular ITAM practice
One of the most common GreenOps mistakes is treating it as a project rather than a process. A one-time audit will surface waste and generate savings, but without ongoing governance, the same waste will quietly accumulate again within months.
The organisations that make the most sustainable progress are those that embed GreenOps thinking into their existing ITAM workflows:
- At renewal — review utilisation before auto-renewing, right-size seat counts, and challenge whether every tool still earns its place in the estate
- At procurement — factor sustainability criteria into vendor selection and purchasing decisions alongside cost and performance
- At offboarding — ensure licences are reclaimed promptly when employees leave, rather than sitting idle on dormant accounts
- At refresh — extend hardware lifecycles where software optimisation makes it viable, and ensure responsible disposal when devices do reach end of life
None of these require a new process. They require sustainability to become a standing consideration within the processes you already have.
Bring the right stakeholders along
GreenOps can’t be owned by IT alone. For it to deliver its full potential, it needs buy-in from the teams whose decisions shape the IT estate, procurement, finance, operations, and sustainability.
That means making the business case clearly and in terms that resonate across functions. For finance, it’s cost reduction. For sustainability teams, it’s measurable progress toward ESG targets. For leadership, it’s demonstrable action on an issue that regulators, investors, and customers are paying closer attention to.
ITAM data is the common thread. It provides the evidence base that makes GreenOps credible, not as a sustainability aspiration, but as an operational discipline with measurable outcomes.
The opportunity ahead
GreenOps is still an emerging practice for most organisations. That’s actually an advantage for those who move now, the gains are significant, the competition is limited, and the regulatory and stakeholder pressure driving adoption is only going to increase.
The tools, the data, and the expertise to build a meaningful GreenOps strategy already exist within most IT functions. What’s needed is the decision to use them.
